How Commuter Benefits Work

Employees

Under Federal tax code 132(f), the IRS allows you to set aside a portion of your salary before taxes are taken out to pay for your commute. And now, with the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, you can set aside even more pretax money to cover more of – or possibly all of – your commute, no matter how you get to work. It doesn’t matter whether you commute by train, subway, bus, ferry or any combination.

Paying for your commute with tax-free dollars is easy with a tax-free commuter benefits program like TransitChek®.

  • Once you enroll in your company's TransitChek Program, you choose the amount you want deducted from your paycheck to go toward your commute, up to $230 per month for transit and up to $230 for commuter parking.
  • The amount you choose gets deducted before taxes.
  • You receive a commuter benefit product-- a card, pass or voucher-- which will allow you to pay for your commuting expenses, tax-free.

With TransitChek, you can now put aside up to $230 a month for transit and an additional $230 a month for commuter parking for a total deduction of up to $460 a month – meaning you can save as much as $1,900* or more a year.
